Farming and the Burren: Michael Davoren

Life in the Burren has revolved around agriculture for 6000 years. In this most pristine and biodiverse environment in Ireland, there are unique practices that have changed little over the millennia. Yet there have also been huge changes in recent decades, and the future is increasingly uncertain both in terms of how the landscape and its people can meet future challenges. Michael Davoren will lead a wide-ranging discussion, illuminating how life in the Burren area has changed, as farming practices and rural society have evolved from the horse-drawn to the digital era, from ringforts and self-sufficient smallholdings to a globalised marketplace. He will consider ‘where next’ – what might North Clare look and feel like as the 21st century unfolds and the climate changes? This session will be conducted as a dialogue, involving the audience – whether local resident or passing visitor – as much as possible, answering questions and encouraging debate. Michael Davoren is a sixth generation Burren farmer, a founder member of the Burren branch of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and its chairman for many years. He is on the steering committee of the Burren LIFE project, and serving for over 20 years as Burren farmer representative at national level of the IFA.
